My name is Svenja and I am from Germany. I moved to the States three months ago because my husband Markus started his PhD in plant biology at MSU.
I graduated in Germany with a Diplom in biology (equivalent to a Master degree) in December 2003. Afterwards I worked as a lecturer at the Department of Biology and Biology Education at the Technical University of Braunschweig.
Michigan Association of Conservation Districts (MACD) is the host site where I am serving. MACD is working to strengthen Michigan's Conservation Districts through leadership, information, and representation.
I will be developing an associate membership program, which includes creating brochures, websites, and additional membership materials. The annual MACD Michigan Prescribed Fire Council Convention is held in December and I will assist Lori Phalen, MACD Executive Director, with planning it.
At the end of the year I will start to design and publish a quarterly web-based newsletter and an annual report. I will also participate in developing an updated director and staff training program for Michigan Conservation Districts.
I love to travel and learn about foreign countries. That is one reason why I moved to the U.S. I have enjoyed being here so far and I am sure I will have a great time in Michigan. I am looking forward to exploring the state. When I’m not serving for MACD I love to play the African Drum (Djembe). As my husband and I just moved out of an apartment into a house I’m now able to play whenever I want without disturbing any neighbors.
I am excited about being involved in environmental protection for a cleaner, healthier, economically stronger Michigan. My goal for the year of service with Huron Pines AmeriCorps is to learn as much as I can and to give as much as I can—I am going to get things done!
