Spring Service Project:
Erosion Control on the Black River
Once again, Huron Pines AmeriCorps will be celebrating the national AmeriCorps week with a special service project. On May 9, members and volunteers will spend the day planting native plants and stabilizing a streambank in the Black River system near Cheboygan. This site is important because it contributes sediment directly to the river where endangered lake sturgeon spawn every spring. Michigan Department of Natural Resources researchers and staff from Sturgeon for Tomorrow will be on hand to teach the volunteers about the importance of preserving habitat for these rare fish.
There will will be 50-60 volunteers for the
project, which was organized in conjunction with Sturgeon for Tomorrow. Community leaders and the media are also invited to attend.
